Washington Redskins 2008 NFL Projection:
Former NFL quarterback Jim Zorn takes over for Joe Gibbs as the head coach of the Redskins in 2008.
The Redskins are coming off a playoff season where they were eliminated
at Seattle in the wild card round
with backup QB Todd Collins at the helm.
Often overlooked by many NFL fans is the quality of Washington’s defense.
If you factor out the 52 points surrendered to the New England
Patriots’ record breaking offense last season, Washington gave up a little over 17 points per game. And that included
having to play top scoring teams such as the Cowboys and Giants twice, Green Bay, and Arizona.
This year the Skins added Jason Taylor at left defensive end. Thankfully, he’s only expected to miss limited time with a preseason
knee sprain. Between Taylor on the left side, and
Andre Carter on the right side, Washington may be able to mount a strong enough pass rush to get around the top notch
offensive lines of division rivals Dallas and New York and put more pressure
on Romo and Manning.
Meanwhile the rushing defense should be solid again with Cornelius Griffin up front and London Fletcher
at middle linebacker.
The Redskins need linebacker Rocky McIntosh to make a solid return from knee surgery as well as right cornerback
Carlos Rogers.
On offense Washington will be rolling out the West Coast offense.
In the draft they selected two big wide receivers; Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, plus receiving tight end
Fred Davis with their first three picks. These players fit the new offensive scheme, but rookie receivers
rarely make a major impact at the pro level.
What the Redskins really need in ’08 is for their aged offensive line headed by Pete Kendall, Casey Rabach, and Randy Thomas
to stay healthy. Pete’s knees seem to be in good shape this preseason and that’s tremendous news
for running backs Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.
Speaking of staying healthy, the Redskins would be ecstatic to get a full season out of
Santana Moss.
At the quarterback position it will be interesting to see if Jason Campbell’s
deep ball improves compared to last year when he missed a few open bombs
due to not putting enough air under the ball… A.K.A. line drive overthrows.
And let’s not forget to mention the buzz that rookie Colt Brennan has caused this preseason.
Schedule Analysis:
Washington will play 6 games versus teams that made the playoffs in ’07.
Record Projection:
Washington is a smash mouth squad– that with one exception was in every game last season.
As long as the Skins can remain injury-free there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be
able to make another run at the postseason in the 2008 – 2009 season.
Overall we now predict a record of (11-5) for the Washington Redskins– a slight downgrade before the regular
season kicks off due to our lofty expectations.
