St. Louis Rams 2012 Season Win Total Outlook & Projection:
2012 St. Louis Rams Las Vegas Season Win Total Line;
As of this writing, oddsmakers have the 2012 NFL regular season
win total line
for the St. Louis Rams set at 6 wins.
This represents an increase of 4 wins over the Rams
prior season record of (2-14)…
It also represents a decrease of 1.5 wins compared
to the Rams’ regular season win total line from
last preseason.
Part of this line has to do with the Rams
being in a rebuilding mode. While the win total line
is substantially higher than the previous season’s record,
there’s only so low Vegas can make these numbers…
More telling is the substantial drop from last season’s line.
While there is certainly long term optimism due to the signing of a great coach
like Jeff Fisher, there’s likely only so much he can do in a single season.
That said the Rams added C Scott Wells to aid their
offensive line woes. And also added CB Cortland Finnegan to the secondary.
Unfortunately top draft pick DT Michael Brockers sustained a dreaded
high ankle sprain.
Furthermore, the Rams will rely on rookies to make
contributions in the passing game which may not bode well in a division
rapidly becoming dominated by defensive play with the 49ers, Seahawks, and Cardinals
sporting either top defenses, or defenses rapidly on the rise.
Schedule Analysis:
In 2012 the Rams will suit up just 5 times versus
teams that made the playoffs last year;
However looks can be deceiving as the Rams will also travel to Chicago in week 3, a team which
likely would have made the playoffs if not for QB Jay Cutler’s injury.
Furthermore, increasing competition in the NFC West,
the Seahawks likely have a substantial upgrade at QB over Tavaris Jackson
in Russell Wilson not to mention Matt Flynn.
A trip to Buffalo in week 14 finds a team which made vast defensive improvement during the offseason.
On the flip side, the Rams have several contests against teams with similarly low regular season win total lines
including Washington in week 2, two tilts with Arizona, @Miami in week 6, home to Minnesota
in week 15, and @Tampa Bay in week 16…
However out of these teams, only Tampa Bay was in the
vicinity of the (-214) net point differential the Rams suffered last season. Minnesota
at roughly half that negative amount was the next closest.
Record Projection:
In 2012 we project the Rams to go (2-14), a slight upgrade from our opening projection
but falling below the
Vegas season win total of 6 games… With a good head coach and several contests
against teams with poor records from the prior season, the Rams could perhaps win
as many as 5 games if things go well. But we find it difficult to make such
a projection with a weak passing offense with little else to overcompensate
for the deficiency.
