San Francisco 49ers 2010 NFL Projection:
“SWOT analysis” of the 2010 49ers (including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats) followed by the FootballLOCKS.com classic schedule analysis
and a record projection summary.
Strengths:
Rushing defense, ILB Patrick Willis, ILB Takeo Spikes,
DE Justin Smith, NT Aubrayo Franklin,
RB Frank Gore, TE Vernon Davis, LT Joe Staley, FS Dashon Goldson,
kickoff coverage, P Andy Lee,
head coach Mike Singletary’s ability to motivate, offensive line depth,
linebacker depth.
Weaknesses:
Pass defense, offensive line run blocking (addressed via the draft),
punt returns, kickoff returns.
Opportunities:
Offensive line could be transformed by 1st round draft picks LT Anthony Davis from Rutgers and
LG Mike Iupati from Idaho.
QB Alex Smith improved his play last season and now has
a chance to throw to WR Michael Crabtree for a full season.
LB Travis LaBoy could further bolster the pass rush.
RB Brian Westbrook could provide a 3rd down boost.
WR Ted Ginn Jr. could improve the return game.
The return of CB Nate Clements could
improve the pass defense.
Threats:
Tons of travel miles, including a so called “home game” at Wembley Stadium in London week 8 versus
Denver… C Eric Heitmann fractured left fibula (off crutches),
LT Joe Staley’s knee, NT Aubrayo Franklin missed training camp (though used a personal trainer).
Schedule Analysis:
In 2010 San Francisco will face off six times versus teams that graced the postseason
a year ago;
Division rival Arizona figures to be easier competition thanks to Warner retiring. And the Eagles
have had offensive line woes this preseason.
Other potentially competitive matchups include;
Overall San Fran’s schedule is fairly light.
Record Projection:
In 2010 we project the 49ers to go (10-6), a slight downgrade from
our opening preseason projection… San Francisco’s
defense can stop the run. And an improved offensive line
should bolster their ground game which in turn should help open the pass.
