San Francisco 49ers 2007 NFL Projection:
In 2006 the 49ers were a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team. On the plus side they swept Seattle and won at Denver.
But on the flip side they got swept by Arizona and surrendered a league worst 412 points, including 30 or more
points in seven games. Furthermore, in seven games against teams that made the playoffs last season, the 49ers
were outscored 182-84.
The 49ers enter the 2007 having made several offseason moves including the addition of
Ashley Lelie & Darrell Jackson to the offense, and Nate Clements & Tully Banta-Cain to the defense.
We of course would have like to seen the defensive line dramatically improved, but
without question these are nice additions which should help close the 114 point gap between the number of
points
scored and points surrendered in 2006; or at least prevent it from getting any wider.
What do we phrase it like that?
Consider that in 2007 the 49ers find what would normally be considered a lighter schedule
compared to last season with
only five games versus teams that made the postseason in 2006, two of which are of course
against Seattle. However, the probability of sweeping the Seahawks two years in a row is low.
Furthermore, of these five games versus playoff teams, four are in a row, early in the season
from week 4 through
week 8 as follows;
Also consider the above four games are preceeded by trips to St. Louis and to Pittsburgh, neither of which
are easy places to win. The fact of the matter is there is real
potential for a large number of losses in six of the first seven
games in 2007, despite overall improvements made to the San Francisco 49ers.
As a result, we think the 49ers will need to come out smoking in 2007 to avoid digging an early hole in the record
department. This means the team must jell early with its new players.
Meanwhile, the schedule during the second half of the season lines up nicer for the 49ers, although it still contains
a few tough matchups including games versus Cincinnati, at Carolina, at Seattle, and versus St. Louis.
Overall, we’re predicting a (5-11) record for the 49ers in 2007, as the schedule in 2007
is tougher than meets the eye, and we think the 49ers will take a step back
in the record department before taking a step forward. Of course, if the team jells quickly, and
really does come out smoking, then there is certainly upside to these predictions.
