New York Giants 2010 NFL Projection:
“SWOT analysis” of the 2010 Giants (including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats) followed by the FootballLOCKS.com classic schedule analysis
and a record projection summary.
Strengths:
QB Eli Manning better with age, head coach Tom Coughlin, improved WR depth (Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham),
offensive line experience, CB Corey Webster, DE Justin Tuck,
S Antrel Rolle acquired in free agency from Arizona.
Weaknesses:
Offensive line depth, running back durability, kickoff returns,
linebacker core.
Opportunities:
Potential to reclaim once formidable defensive line
rotation as DE Justin Tuck is recovered from shoulder injury,
DT Chris Canty is back from injury– but currently Canty
has a groin issue, as does rookie DE Jason Pierre-Paul…
Potential for DE Osi Umenyiora to recapture some of his former pass rushing glory.
If the Giants’ pass rush can reclaim its old form, it would alleviate
pressure from the secondary. It would also be perfect timing as
division rival Dallas will suit up Doug Free at left tackle
having parted ways with Flozell Adams…
Acquisition of G Shawn Andrews adds depth to the O-line.
Meanwhile, can safety Kenny Phillips regain his form?
Can rookie DT Linval Joseph help clog the middle?
WR Victor Cruz has impressed… If the Giants can cash
in on some of these opportunities, they could return to the postseason.
Threats:
The seemingly non-stop barrage of injuries which has brought the Giants down to earth.
Competitive threats include the now potent OLB pass rushing duo of DeMarcus Ware & Anthony Spencer
from division rival Dallas
and a possible DE pass rushing duo of Trent Cole & Brandon Graham from division rival Philadelphia.
Schedule Analysis:
In 2010 the Giants will play 7 games versus teams that made the postseason
a year ago;
- @Indianapolis – Week 2
- @Dallas – Week 7
- Dallas – Week 10
- @Philadelphia – Week 11
- @Minnesota – Week 14
- Philadelphia – Week 15
- @Green Bay – Week 16
As you can see, the majority of these contests are in the 2nd half of the season.
Perhaps this buys some time for Giants’ players to get healthier– or a pessimist
might claim it’s just more time for the Giants to rack up
additional injuries.
Time will tell.
Record Projection:
Overall we project the Giants to go (10-6).
Health is paramount to this prediction.
The Giants need key players such as offensive lineman
Chris Snee & Shaun O’Hara, and defensive lineman Justin Tuck & Chris Canty
to be healthy and play at a high level in 2010.
But already in preseason the injury bug is biting Big Blue again,
