2006 NFL Projection:
As of the writing of these preseason predictions, the status
of Willie Roaf is not entirely clear. However, the Chiefs find an
easier schedule compared to other top teams of 2005, as a result
of drawing the NFC West & AFC North, each with two teams that
finished with six wins or less in 2005.
Further favorable scheduling
situations are in play such as drawing the Jaguars at home in week 17,
when it may be a bit a little too cold for the visitors, while also
traveling to Miami in mid November when much of the Florida heat
is likely to have dissipated.
Perhaps most importantly,
2006 presents one of the lighter second half schedules the Chiefs have faced in several years.
As Chiefs fans know, the second half of the season has not been kind to Kansas City,
in part due to the competitiveness of the AFC West, and tough second half scheduling
spoiling several hot first halfs to the season.
The favorable scheduling this year opens the
door for a solid 10-6 team from 2005 that barely missed
the playoffs to potentially capitalize and make some big noise in 2006.
Even if Willie Roaf stays
retired, the Chiefs should be able to take advantage of the
more favorable scheduling and perhaps challenge Denver for the top spot in the West.
If Herm Edwards can get the defense to improve enough compared
to last season, the Chiefs may have a solid chance to go deep into the playoffs and perhaps more.
