Houston Texans 2007 NFL Projection:
The Houston Texans enter the 2007 season coming off a (6-10) campaign, in which the team scored the 4th fewest points
in the NFL. Overall the Texans scored 99 fewer points than surrendered by the defense.
With such numbers it was
a bit surprising the Texans managed to hit the 6 win mark, thanks to an unlikely
sweeping of the Jaguars, a win over the champs in week 16, in which the Texans took advantage
of the Colts’ porous run defense (not to mention the Colts
had the division locked up), a narrow win over Miami, a win versus Cleveland, and a win at Oakland.
With new QB Matt Schaub, can the Texans improve upon their 2006 season?
While we think highly of Schaub (who could forget his fill-in performance versus New England in October of 2005),
we’re not of the opinion that quarterback was the major need area for this Houston team.
In Houston, Matt Schaub will find an offensive line that hasn’t exactly been lighting it up.
As a result, Schaub is likely to endure a high level of pressure from opposing defenses,
a-la Carr.
At least Schaub will have Ahman Green to hand the ball off to. However, if there aren’t
many holes opened by the offensive line, Green won’t have an easy go.
On the defensive side of the ball, Houston wasn’t very formidable in 2006. Granted the
Texans’ defense played much better during the second
half of the season. But also drew several offensively challenged teams including;
Cleveland, Oakland, Buffalo, Tennessee (twice), the Giants without Plaxico Burress, even the Jets could be
considered as borderline.
In 2007 we believe the probability of the Texans sweeping the Jaguars is essentially nil, and likely to go the
other way. We also doubt the Texans will repeat 2006’s late season win versus the Colts… And the Dolphins
look much improved. The potential is great to lose those four wins from 2006 to 2007.
This season the Texans’ schedule is as tough as ever, with game after game against either a playoff caliber team,
or a team with a top defense including;
That doesn’t even include games with Tennessee, a team that swept the Texans last season, or Atlanta…
In light of the above, we believe
the Texans are likely to take a step back
in the record department before taking a step forward.
Overall we’re predicting a record of (2-14) for the Houston Texans in 2007.
However, if the Texans’ offensive line play improves, or if Schaub plays incredibly, then there is room for upside.
Additionally, if the defense continues its improved level of play from the second half
of 2006, when lining up against 2007’s stiffer competition, then there’s
surely upside to these season long football predictions as well.
