Detroit Lions 2010 NFL Projection:
“SWOT analysis” of the 2010 Lions (including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats) followed by the FootballLOCKS.com classic schedule analysis
and a record projection summary.
Strengths:
WR Calvin Johnson, DT Corey Williams, DT Ndamukong Suh.
Weaknesses:
Pass defense, offensive line pass blocking, offensive line depth, RB health,
linebacker depth, secondary.
Opportunities:
1st round draft selection DT Ndamukong Suh looks to
transform the defensive line.
DT Corey Williams could wreak havoc next to Suh.
DE Kyle Vanden Bosch could transform the pass rush and take pressure off
a weak secondary.
Receiver height (WR Calvin Johnson, WR Bryant Johnson, TE Brandon Pettigrew,
TE Tony Scheffler) could
create matchup problems for defenses.
WR Nate Burleson could give the Lions a consistent second wideout,
and help in the return game.
CB Chris Houston could help the secondary.
1st round draft pick #2 (RB Jahvid Best) could bring Barry Sanders like
running back to Detroit.
Can QB Matthew Stafford improve upon his rookie campaign?
Threats:
Departure of LB Larry Foote & LB Ernie Simms.
QB Matthew Stafford’s interceptions.
Strong defenses in Green Bay & Minnesota.
Strong offenses in Green Bay & Minnesota.
Chicago’s acquisition of DE Julius Peppers.
Schedule Analysis:
In 2010 Detroit will play 8 contests versus squads that made the postseason
last year including;
In spite of Detroit’s vast offseason improvements, many of the above games still impress as losing
propositions.
Other potentially difficult games include;
While the opening contest at Chicago looks more winnable with each passing day
given the Bears’ woes, overall Detroit will surely be underdogs in the vast majority of their games–
even if they pull upsets in weeks 1 & 2.
Record Projection:
Overall we now project the Lions to go (5-11) in 2010.
This is an upgrade from our opening projection as their defensive line
could cause trouble for opposing teams. But the Lions’ offensive line and rest of their
defense may have too many weaknesses to grab many more wins.
