Chicago Bears 2010 NFL Projection:
“SWOT analysis” of the 2010 Bears (including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats) followed by the FootballLOCKS.com classic schedule analysis
and a record projection summary.
Strengths:
Linebacker core & depth (Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs,
Nick Roach, Pisa Tinoisamoa),
DE Julius Peppers, RB depth (Matt Forte & Chester Taylor), Devin Hester (punt returns),
QB Jay Cutler’s arm strength & pocket mobility, kickoff returns,
K Robbie Gould.
Weaknesses:
Offensive line’s run blocking,
rushing offense (29th ranked last season– RB Matt Forte wasn’t as quick as in the previous season),
Cutler’s propensity for throwing interceptions,
kickoff coverage, wide receiver experience, and right tackle.
Opportunities:
DT Tommie Harris– can he regain his old form? If so the defense could be tremendous.
Has RB Matt Forte regained the step he lost in ’09?
C Olin Kreutz offseason surgery to repair his Achilles’ tendon
ought to help him play better.
Threats:
Cutler’s red zone interceptions, offensive line potentially unable to
pass block effectively under offensive coordinator
Mike Martz’s scheme for deep, long developing passes.
Strong defenses and offenses in Green Bay & Minnesota.
Schedule Analysis:
Da Bears will suit up on 8 occasions versus teams that made the postseason last year;
It’s a brutal stretch between weeks 14 – 17 to close out the season. And most of the above teams have very good defenses, which
could spell trouble based on the Bears’ preseason offensive line woes.
Other potentially tough games include;
@NY Giants – Week 4
@Miami – Week 11
Record Projection:
We now project the Bears to go (5-11) in 2010, another slight downgrade, following a slight upgrade (following an initial downgrade)
from our opening forecast. Chicago’s schedule is unkind. And while most focus
on the Bears’ offense, it’s likely to be their defense which will have to carry them…
And while there’s some reason to be optimistic about this defense, the offense has simply been a mess in preseason.
