Carolina Panthers 2012 Season Win Total Outlook & Projection:
2012 Carolina Panthers Las Vegas Season Win Total Line;
As of this writing, oddsmakers have the regular season
win total line
for the Carolina Panthers set at 7.5 wins.
This number represents an increase
of 1.5 wins from the Panthers’ prior year record of (6-10),
when they topped the Vegas season win total line of 4.5 by 1.5 wins.
Part of this season’s line has to do with the
return of LB Jon Beason, which should help Carolina’s defense improve year over year,
although he is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue.
This line is also likely bolstered due to the betting public’s enamoration with QB Cam Newton’s explosiveness.
However, the betting public has a propensity to overvalue offense, while undervaluing defense.
A number like 7.5 wins can seem tempting. After all, the Panthers just have to go
.500 for an over wager to hit.
Schedule Analysis:
In 2012 the Panthers will play 6 games versus teams that made the postseason a year ago;
That’s one fewer contest versus returning playoff teams compared to a season ago.
However, looks can be deceiving. Carolina will also suit up
home to Dallas in week 7, @Chicago in week 8, @Philadelphia in week 12,
and @San Diego in week 15… These opponenets underperformed last season,
some due to starting QB injuries.
When considering these four additional teams, it can be argued that Carolina will
play a total of 10 games versus playoff caliber teams in 2012– or 5/8 of their contests
Record Projection:
Last season we underestimated the impact Cam Newton would have in his first professional season,
as did Vegas. This season, we feel Cam Newton’s explosiveness at the pro level is factored into
the line… However, Carolina’s pass defense remains a huge question mark. Yet Carolina
is slated to suit up against Drew Brees twice, Matt Ryan twice, Eli Manning, Tony Romo,
Jay Cutler, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick, and Philip Rivers.
As a result of this tough scheduling, in 2012 we now project the Panthers to go (6-10).
This is a slight downgrade following an initial upgrade from our opening projection, and
falling short of the Vegas win total of 7.5…
