Tennessee Titans 2009 NFL Projection:
Last season we projected the Titans to go (12-4).
They did us one better at (13-3) as Kerry Collins
took over the quarterback position from Vince Young,
leading the Titans into the postseason where they lost
a divisional playoff game to the Ravens, even though Tennessee
completely dominated the matchup.
Once again the Titans enter the season with many
qualities needed to win NFL games.
They possess a
tremendous offensive line
with Michael Roos, Eugene Amano, Kevin Mawae,
Jake Scott, and David Stewart.
In fact, their strength
on offensive line is exactly why we praised the selection
of running back Chris Johnson in last season's draft.
The pick made perfect sense and it paid off handsomely.
Coming into '09, LenDale White shed some pounds.
It will be interesting to see if his quicker step
will be more valuable than his former punishing size.
The Titans added wide receiver Nate Washington
from the Steelers and drafted wide receiver Kenny Britt
in an effort to improve the potency of the passing game.
The result could be an offense that scores quicker
compared to last season, forcing the defense back onto the field
earlier... Not always a desirable wish.
Of course Tennessee also possesses a strong defense.
But the loss of defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth cannot
be sugarcoated... How often have we seen the Titans'
defense struggle in the past when Haynesworth wasn't able
to suit up?
On the plus side, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch is back from a groin injury.
The Titans return a solid linebacking crew
with Bulluck, Tulloch, Thorton, and Fowler...
As well as a great secondary
with studs like Cortland Finnegan, Michael Griffin,
and Chris Hope. However,
the departure of Haynesworth up front could
negatively affect their coverage.
Schedule Analysis:
A look at Tennessee's 2009 schedule
shows approximately 7 games that look tough on paper;
Record Projection:
It may be challenging for Tennessee to duplicate last season's dominance
when they scored 141 more points than they allowed--
especially after losing their dominating presence up front in
Albert Haynesworth.
The Titans have talent on both sides of the ball. Probably
enough to reach double digit wins again.
Overall we forecast a mark of (10-6) in 2009.
