Pittsburgh Steelers 2009 NFL Projection:
Last season when forecasting the Pittsburgh Steelers' season we wrote,
"sometimes when a team faces a world beater schedule they rise to the occasion and become an even better team.
The constant high level of competition keeps them sharpened and focused each week of the season, and they rise up to become champions."
Granted, we didn't predict the Steelers would win the Super Bowl (due to a weakened offensive line)... Though we insinuated the possibility.
It was an incredible season as Mike Tomlin became the youngest head coach to ever win a Super Bowl as
the Steelers overcame their weak offensive line and injuries at running back on their way to their 6th Super Bowl victory,
this coming at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals.
Ben Roethlisberger's nimble footwork was much to thank all season long.
Yes, Roethlisberger was sacked 46 times last season,
but he probably escaped another 46 sacks on his own, creating many big plays in the process...
Much like the legendary John Elway used to do.
Of course, Dick LeBeau yet again led the Steelers' defense to the top rating in the league.
The Steelers defense projects to be ferocious once again in 2009 led by incredible outside linebackers LaMarr Woodley
and James Harrison. The defensive line is solid, and they added a little youth
in the draft with a first round pick, Ziggy Hood from Missouri. The secondary is plenty good
led my strong safety Troy Palamalu,
but could be deeper (cornerback Bryant McFadden is now with the Cardinals).
On offense the Steelers hope Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall
can stay healthy, and they need their offensive line to improve year over year which shouldn't be that hard,
considering last season's woes.
Hopefully the foot injury sustained by Big Ben at the end of camp
won't hold back the play everyone has grown accustomed to.
Schedule Analysis:
A look at Pittsburgh's 2009 schedule
shows a light slate of games for a team coming off a Super Bowl victory.
Most notable are what most fans would consider 8 easy games as follows;
Record Projection:
With a dominating defense, 2 time champion at quarterback,
and light strength of schedule,
it's hard to imagine the Steelers not achieving double-digit
victories again this season. Look for (11-5) or better... A slight
downgrade from our opening preseason forecast, as we don't think they'll
sweep the Ravens this year.
