Review Past Philadelphia Eagles Season Predictions 2007 | 2006

Philadelphia Eagles 2008 NFL Projection:
Last season the Philadelphia Eagles were a popular pick to make a run at the title.

We all know what happened. Reggie Brown was a first half bust at receiver. And the Eagles' schedule was too brutal to handle thanks to a strong NFC East. In fact, 9 of Philly's games were against teams that made the playoffs due to the NFC East fielding 3 postseason teams. Philadelphia went just (2-7) in these games.

In 2008 the Eagles made a splash in free agency by signing Asante Samuel away from New England in an effort to bolster their pass defense.

Additionally, the Eagles signed linebacker Rocky Bolman from the Raiders. While the Eagles' run defense is solid, they need to improve against the pass with opponents lining up against them such as Plaxico Burress and T.O. The Giants and Cowboys also field top grade offensive lines. And the Eagles need to do a better job of getting to their quarterbacks.

Improved coverage provided by Samuel should at least increase the number of coverage sacks overall.

On offense there's no question that both Westbrook and what appears to be a healthier McNabb can carry the Eagles against most competition. The problem is that Philadelphia's schedule is tough again in 2008 thanks to playing in one of the top two divisions in football. And now Kevin Curtis is out indefinitely with a sports hernia.

Schedule Analysis:
Philadelphia will play half of their games versus teams that made the playoffs in 07.

Furthermore, the Eagles play a week 15 home game against Cleveland, also expected to be playoff caliber.

Record Projection:
Whether or not the Eagles can make the postseason in 2008 will probably come down to McNabb's level of elusiveness and ability to keep plays alive-- so that Philly's sub-par receiving group can get open more often against the plethora of top flight defenses the Eagles match up against in '08.

Another determining factor will be whether or not the Eagles can generate a pass rush strong enough to beat the offensive lines of the Giants and Cowboys.

While McNabb might be in better shape heading into the new season, it may not be enough to crack double digit wins against their difficult schedule.

Overall we're now predicting a record of (9-7) for the 2008 edition of the Philadelphia Eagles. While we initially downgraded when Curtis was lost-- he's not what drives this team. The Eagles should be able to withstand his absence.
