New York Jets 2009 NFL Projection:
When we wrote about the Jets upgrading their offensive line last season,
we thought Thomas Jones would have a solid year, but we didn't know he'd win the AFC's rushing title.
Too bad Brett Favre wasn't equally as productive.
In 2009, Eric Mangini is out
and the New York Jets will hit the field with new head coach
Rex Ryan, formerly defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.
Ryan brings an aggressive defensive style,
not to mention standout Raven linebacker Bart Scott, and free safety Jim Leonhard.
The Jets' defensive line is solid at two of the three positions
with nose tackle Kris Jenkins and defensive end Shaun Ellis.
The secondary is very strong too, led by cornerback Darrelle Revis
and of course free agent acquisition Lito Sheppard.
It will be up to the linebackers to make or break the Jets' defense.
But Calvin Pace is suspended for the first 4 games.
On the other side of the ball
Favre is out, and first round draft choice Mark Sanchez is in.
Sanchez has beat out Kellen Clemens for the starting job.
The New York Jets are going to have an inexperienced quarterback on
the field.
Perhaps in some way that will serve them well...
Consider the Jets have a very solid offensive line
led by Mangold, Faneca, and Ferguson,
so they might benefit by suiting up a quarterback
who's likely to be more cautious about taking unnecessary chances,
as opposed to suiting up a quarterback who often
threw the ball around with reckless abandon.
Of course it helps to have somebody to throw the ball to,
but Laveranues Coles is now with Cincinnati...
Although, David Clowney is back, displaying his preseason fireworks.
Bottom line, other than the strength in the offensive line,
the Jets' passing game might not scare anybody in 2009.
Schedule Analysis:
I'm about to point out 4 key games that could go a long
way towards determining the Jets' success this season;
Why am I pointing out these games you ask?
The above four teams are "trendy picks" to do well in 2009.
All four teams are expected to have better offenses than the Jets this season.
Upon first glance, most people might not give the Jets a chance in these contests.
However, we project the Jets to be stronger defensively than the above four teams.
The Jets may indeed be able to win several of the above games.
Drawing the Falcons at home in cold December certainly won't hurt the Jets'
chances in that game either.
Sizing up other competitors, the Jets are of course likely to have a tough time with the
Patriots.
The Jets may also struggle against
teams such as the
Panthers
and the
Titans
both possessing exceptionally strong running games with the capability of bringing it on the road.
Perhaps the rushing attack of the
Jaguars
will cause problems, especially after the bye week and if the Jets get caught looking ahead to
New England the following week.
Record Projection:
We think the Jets could surprise in 2009. In fact, most of the AFC East looks much improved year over year.
We project the Jets' offensive line and defense to win them a good number of games...
Unless they start losing games because of exceptionally poor quarterback play,
we think the Jets will break the .500 mark at (9-7), a slight bounce back upgrade (9/6/2009)
before the season is ready to kick off.
