Jacksonville Jaguars 2008 NFL Projection:
Last season the Jaguars nearly shocked New England in the Divisional playoffs thanks to the
phenomenal play of QB David Garrard.
Feeling that they're a legitimate Super Bowl contender, during the off-season Jacksonville made it a point to address their few team weaknesses.
This included drafting two defensive ends;
Derrick Harvey from the Florida Gators, and
Quentin Groves from Auburn in hopes of aiding the pass rush and taking a little pressure off the cornerbacks.
One would think new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams had something
to say in this regard. However, the D-line will miss Marcus Stroud, now with the Bills.
On the offensive side of the ball Jacksonville acquired Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson. Both receivers are fast and could be a good match with
Garrard at the helm who can buy them extra to break away from coverage. Unfortunately, Porter will miss the preseason with a hamstring injury,
while Matt Jones was busted for drug possession.
Offensive woes continue as Brad Meester is likely to miss several games with a biceps injury.
Overall, as one of the leagues more balanced teams, the Jaguars have the ability to compete with the other contenders, and win on the road as evidenced by
two wins @Pittsburgh
last season (one coming in the playoffs), and road wins
@Tampa Bay,
@Tennessee
and even
@Denver which despite Denver's sub par showing last season,
is still a tough place to win.
Schedule Analysis:
A look at Jacksonville's 2008 schedule
shows six games versus teams that made the playoffs last season, whereas division rival Indianapolis will play eight such contests.
Jacksonville will match up against the following playoff teams from a year ago;
Additionally, the Jaguars draw a couple of
teams that were on the verge of the playoffs last season. However, Jacksonville plays these two games at home, whereas
the Colts play the same two squads on the road;
Record Projection:
The Jags certainly have enough talent and coaching to reach double digits in victories, though we're not completely
sold on the WR core... And they might struggle early in the season
without their starting center.
Overall we're now predicting an (11-5) season for Jacksonville (a slight upgrade just before the season starts)
which still may land them behind perennial front runner
Indianapolis and perhaps even Tennessee.
