Houston Texans 2008 NFL Projection:
Last season the Texans posted an impressive (8-8) mark, compiling a (2-6) record versus teams that went on to make the playoffs,
and a (6-2) mark against teams not qualifying for the postseason. Most of the Texans' success came through the air
as Schaub and Rosenfels combined for solid numbers, which was quite
impressive considering that game changer Andre Johnson wasn't on the field in 7 contests. One has to wonder what Houston's record
might have been if they didn't play in the brutally competitive AFC South.
At the draft it was certainly understandable that Houston used its first round pick on Virginia Tech tackle, Duane Brown. If the Texans can add
punch to their running game, it should help to balance their offense while working to keep their defense off the field... Reducing
the defenses' playing time could go a long way towards masking a lack of endurance on the defensive line, not to mention skill
deficiencies in the secondary. But Ahman Green is already gimpy, so running duties could fall into the hands of rookie Steve Slaton.
And it remains to be seen how he'll perform against the difficult schedule Houston will face in '08.
During the off-season the Texans picked up linebacker Rosevelt Colvin. Unfortunately, he didn't pan out in preseason--
coming back from a broken bone in his foot that kept him out of the Patriots' last 5 games of 2007, and
2008 postseason.
The Texans need their linebackers to put forth a better pass rush in obvious passing situations in the coming season.
Schedule Analysis:
A look at Houston's schedule in 2008
shows eight games versus teams that made the playoffs last season including;
Not to mention two games on the road against teams that were on the playoff bubble last season;
Houston clearly faces a difficult schedule that could make taking the next step harder than most
onlookers may want to allow.
Record Projection:
Overall we're predicting a record of
(7-9), a slight step back from last season's (8-8) mark. Unless Houston's offense becomes an unstoppable force,
reaching the postseason
is likely to be a tall order without possession of a formidable defense-- as a member of the top notch AFC South.
