Green Bay Packers 2008 NFL Projection:
Green Bay officially has a new face as Brett Favre has been dealt to the Jets and Aaron Rodgers
takes over the quarterback position.
Surely Rodgers' performance in relief of Favre last November in Dallas
had something to do with Packer management willing to pull the trigger.
Of course it remains to be seen how Rodgers performs in a full season of play.
He certainly has a fine supporting cast on offense with the likes of
Ryan Grant, Greg Jennings, and Donald Driver. Not to mention an above average
offensive line.
However in a recent
NFL interview
Greg Jennings noted that Rodgers often throws the ball
too hard on many passes. And while Jennings was light-hearted about the issue,
there's a fine line between grinning and bearing it as a receiver, and ending up
with a quarterback overly thinking his passes to the point where it may negatively affect
his game... Green Bay's offense certainly is in uncharted territory. And there is at least
one kink to work out.
On the other side of the ball,
Green Bay finished with the leagues
11th ranked defense in 2007.
However, looking back it can be argued that at least half of Green Bay's
games came against teams that were offensively challenged in '07.
Adding fuel to this train of thought is the
trading of Corey Williams to Cleveland. Some are quick to point out the Packers were deep at this
position so could afford to part ways. But if there's one spot it pays to be deep in the NFL, it's
the defensive line.
The Packers' linebacking group and secondary are strong enough to handle most teams.
But this is a squad that expects to be competing in January. So they'll have to do a better
job this season against the league's elite receivers if they are to take the next step.
Schedule Analysis:
Green Bay will play 6 games against teams that made the playoffs in '07, thanks to drawing the AFC
South which fielded three playoff teams last year.
Toughening up their schedule are the two annual games against
Minnesota,
projected to be playoff caliber with a very strong defense
(weeks 1 and 10).
Not to mention Green Bay was swept by a
Chicago
team last season that was riddled with injuries on defense, and now their defense is healthier.
Record Projection:
A lot of pundits think the Packers will pick right up with Rodgers
where they left off with Favre. And that would be exciting to see.
However, we think there are bound to be a few
growing pains. Overall we predict a record
of (10-6) for the 2008 Green Bay Packers as we project a bit of stumbling against
other top teams in '08 without the presence of Favre, much to the chagrin of Cheeseheads across the nation.
