Dallas Cowboys 2010 NFL Projection:
"SWOT analysis" of the 2010 Cowboys (including strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats) followed by the FootballLOCKS.com classic schedule analysis
and a record projection summary.
Strengths:
Linebacking core (DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Bradie James, Keith Brooking), rushing defense,
QB Tony Romo's scrambling ability, the passing game, the running game,
RB depth and diversity (Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice),
breakout WR Miles Austin, TE Jason Witten,
interior of the offensive line (Andre Gurode, RG Leonard Davis, and LG Kyle Kosier--
recovering from a knee sprain), NT Jay Ratliff, and CB Mike Jenkins.
Weaknesses:
WR Roy Williams hasn't panned out, the kicking game was horrid last season so
Dallas parted ways with Nick Folk who had previously been a beast,
the pass defense could be better, offensive line depth could become
an issue.
Opportunities:
Rookie WR Dez Bryant could give Dallas a powerful 1-2-3 punch in the receiving department
when combined with Austin and Witten,
RT Marc Colombo's arthroscopic knee procedure could improve his game.
Threats:
Doug Free taking over at LT for Flozell Adams presents a risk to the passing game.
The New York Giants look to have reclaimed a solid defensive line rotation.
The Philadelphia Eagles may have improved their upfront pass rush with
rookie DE Brandon Graham, and the Washington Redskins are likely to generate more offense
with McNabb at QB.
Schedule Analysis:
In 2010 Dallas will play 7 games versus teams that made the postseason last year
as follows;
As you can see, most of these contests are in the later part of the season... Not to mention
Donovan McNabb has gone from the Eagles to the Redskins, so perhaps the Eagles won't be as
formidable, whereas perhaps the Redskins will be more so.
Also of note are two contests versus borderline playoff teams; @Houston in week 3
and home to Tennessee in week 5.
On the plus side, the Cardinals are not the same offense
without QB Kurt Warner, and the Cowboys may have just one ultra cold weather game (week 17 @Philly),
though keep an eye on the temperature for road games versus the Giants and Packers in early November.
Meanwhile, it would be foolish to discount division rival New York, a team which
felt the injury bug last season.
Overall the schedule may seem on the easy side, but that could be deceiving.
Record Projection:
We forecast Dallas to finish (11-5) in 2010, which should be good for 1st place in the NFC East.
We project the Giants to offer the stiffest competition amongst Dallas' division rivals
(assuming the Giants are healthier than last season).
