Cleveland Browns 2008 NFL Projection:
If the Cleveland Browns would take the money they have tied up in their backup quarterback and invest it in their defense,
then we might be talking serious contender.
But the Browns seem enchanted with the idea of having a top salaried
backup quarterback.
I'm calling it fear of commitment. And I think it's going to hurt this team's
chances of going the extra mile. Because they could be putting an even better starting defensive unit on the field.
As far as their offense goes, Cleveland is well balanced, able to move the ball
in the air as well as on the ground. A terrific receiving core bolstered further by the addition of Stallworth,
a rejuvenated Lewis at RB, a top notch offensive line, and a QB who can strike at any moment
from anywhere on the field and there is little to be left desired when the Browns have the ball.
Unfortunately the same monster accolades cannot quite be credited to the defensive side of the ball. Ask any member
of the Dawg Pound... Last season the Browns didn't exactly line up against the
toughest slate of offenses, yet still finished near last in total defense... However, in spite of having few draft picks, Cleveland was able to upgrade
their defensive line with Williams from Green Bay and Rogers from Detroit, each with 7 sacks last season
which should have a domino effect on the rest of the defense... However, if Cleveland didn't have a huge contract with their backup quarterback
they could have added even more.
Schedule Analysis:
A look at Cleveland's 2008 schedule
shows eight games versus teams that made the playoffs last season including;
While the Browns are a much better overall team now as compared to the start of last season,
they also face plenty of tough opponents which could make improving upon last season's impressive win
total harder than most people might allow for.
Record Projection:
Competition from Cleveland's competitors in the AFC North does not appear to be as strong as it was coming into last season,
with the Steelers appearing to be the only real threat for the division title.
Provided Cleveland's key players can stay healthy, this squad appears potent enough to
attain a record of (10-6) even against a slew of tough opponents.
