Baltimore Ravens 2007 NFL Projection:
The Ravens come off a playoff season where so much went right, including
a sweep of the Steelers, and a win over the Chargers. And who's kidding who? Holding the Colts
to 15 points, and out of the end zone in the divisional playoffs was quite a feat, albeit in a losing effort.
A look at Baltimore's 2007 schedule
shows a tough start at Cincinnati and home to the Jets, followed by six very winnable games
heading into the bye. But then eight of the Ravens' final nine games are so tough they could potentially lose them
all... And if that happened, it wouldn't necessarily mean the Ravens weren't still a top team.
It's one of the most brutal streaks any team will face in 2007, and includes three in a row against
the Chargers, Patriots and Colts! If Baltimore wins those three, they'll surely be at the top of every
NFL power ranking chart on the planet... Enough talk; check the brutal 8 games below the Ravens must
play in the final 9 weeks of the season.
Now a lot of NFL handicappers might not put a lot of stock in the Dolphins or Steelers after last season's results.
But Miami still has one of the toughest defenses in the league, and the Steelers are of course just one season removed
from their Super Bowl win.
On the plus side the Ravens added Willis McGahee, whom we believe to be a major upgrade at running
back from Jamal Lewis... Lewis didn't appear to have much of a first step last season. Meanwhile
McGahee averaged more yards per carry versus a tougher schedule compared to Lewis last season.
McGahee's best season was in 2004 when he had a quarterback named Drew Bledsoe taking the defensive
pressure off him. When the Bills went to Losman, McGahee's yards per carry and touchdown production
dropped. We expect these numbers to go back up playing behind Steve McNair.
On the downside the Ravens lost Adalius Thomas from their incredible defense to the Patriots,
a team Baltimore will play in December in a game that's likely to have playoff implications.
With such a tough schedule it's hard to pencil the Ravens in for a repeat of last season's (13-3) record.
(11-5) would be a fine regular season. And that's what we're predicting for Baltimore in 2007, edging out the
Steelers for first place in the AFC North due to the strength of schedule tiebreaker.
