"NFL Picks, Predictions,
  Point Spreads & Odds"

Power Rankings Archives - Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we dubbed that {{unstable power ranking syndrome}}.

Historical NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com payed close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that was too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflected the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they had to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad-- as you'll discover when reading through the archives.

Rank

NFL Team

Record

Comments November 12, 2009

1/1

Saints

8-0

It's not always easy to come back against strong rushing teams, but the Saints worked their magic, coming back from down 14 against upset minded, division rival Carolina.

2/2

Vikings

7-1

Minnesota had a bye and will get back to action in week 10 versus Detroit. All signs point to (8-1).

3/3

Colts

8-0

The Colts remained perfect as Dallas Clark had 14 catches versus Houston. Overtime was averted thanks to Kris Brown missing a 42 yard field goal as the clock expired. Up next New England on Sunday night. A victory would go a long way toward earning the top playoff seed in the AFC come January.

4/5

Bengals

6-2

Cincinnati added another quality victory, dominating the Ravens on both sides of the ball to earn a sweep. Can they keep it going next week-- and sweep the Steelers? If so, Cincinnati has a shot for a first round playoff bye. Chris Henry out for the year.

5/6

Steelers

6-2

The Steelers were the Steelers Monday night in Denver-- as it all came together for a big road win. After a slow start, Pittsburgh is back in the running for a first round playoff bye. This week's game versus Cincinnati is crucial of course.

6/4

Broncos

6-2

Orton threw 3 picks, Roethlisberger threw 3 TD's. And there you have it. The Broncos are still on pace to take the AFC West, but if they don't win at Washington this week, that could change.

7/7

Patriots

6-2

Moss had a big day as the Patriots notched their sixth victory, knocking off the Dolphins at home. New England almost certainly needs to win this week at Indy to have any shot at the top playoff seed in the AFC.

8/9

Cowboys

6-2

Dallas moved into first place in the NFC East thanks to upsetting the Eagles in Philadelphia. Dallas was our free pick of the week, and our money line underdog of the week. Can any team keep Austin out of the end zone? How many more games would he have to win for Dallas to be listed as an MVP candidate? Hmmmm.

9/8

Ravens

4-4

The Ravens fell back to .500, as they were outplayed on both sides of the ball at Cincinnati. At (4-4) and having been swept by the Bengals, one would think the Ravens' playoff chances are in jeapordy. But we still project Baltimore to make the playoffs thanks in part to an earlier win at San Diego.

10/12

Cardinals

5-3

Warner bounced back from a 5 interception performance versus Carolina with 5 TD's at Chicago-- as the Cardinals continued to make "the road" their home away from home.

11/10

Falcons

5-3

Atlanta's large first half lead was more than enough to seal the deal versus Washington. The Falcons appear to be on pace for a wild card spot, helped in part by the struggling Eagles, Packers, and Bears.

12/19

Chargers

5-3

The Chargers road victory in the closing moments against the Giants combined with Denver's loss to Pittsburgh keeps them in the hunt for the postseason.

13/11

Eagles

5-3

The Eagles dropped a key home game to Dallas. At least the Giants are reeling too.

14/13

Giants

5-4

The Giants dropped a heartbreaker at home to the Chargers. They have a perfectly timed bye week to ponder their 4 game slide.

15/16

Dolphins

3-5

The Dolphins gave the Patriots a run for their money. And Pat White got into the act. But leads in the second half haven't equated to many victories for Miami in '09.

16/17

Jets

4-4

The Jets had a bye and will get back to action in week 10 versus the Jaguars. If they lose this game, stick a fork in 'em.

17/18

Texans

5-4

The Texans lost by 3 points at Indianapolis-- as Kris Brown was unable to connect on a 42 yard field goal... Our projections show the Texans falling short of the playoffs. A victory in this game could have provided the momentum needed to make a run at qualifying.

18/14

Packers

4-4

Rodgers was picked off 3 times in Tampa as the Packers were shocked by the Buccaneers. We can excuse their 2 losses to Minnesota. And in hindsight their week 2 loss to Cincinnati... But this? To have any shot at the postseason, Green Bay has to win several games against winning teams. Up next Dallas.

19/15

Bears

4-4

Olsen hauled in 3 TD's versus the Cardinals, but it wasn't even close to enough as the Tommie Harris-less (ejected) Bears were no match. Now with 3 losses in their last 4 games, Chicago has gone from playoff projected to not even being on the projected bubble.

20/21

Bills

3-5

The Bills had a bye and will get back to action in week 10 at Tennessee. Buffalo is working on a two game road winning streak.

21/22

Panthers

3-5

The Panthers missed a golden opportunity to turn their season around, failing to capitalize on an early 14 point lead at New Orleans.

22/20

49ers

3-5

San Francisco fell to 2 games below .500 as they were mildly upset at home by the Titans. It's almost time to start thinking about next year. On second thought, they're already thinking about next year, which is why Smith is playing QB.

23/23

Seahawks

3-5

Seattle picked of Stafford five times en route to a come from behind victory against the Lions. Seattle could get back into the NFC West race with an upset at Arizona in week 10.

24/24

Jaguars

4-4

Jacksonville got back to .500, as the Chiefs' 4th quarter rally ran out of time. For the Jags to have any shot at postseason hunting, they'll have to get above .500 ASAP... That means earning a road win versus the Jets in week 10.

25/26

Titans

2-6

Vince Young played turnover free ball in San Francisco. The Titans have won with this recipe in the past.

26/25

Raiders

2-6

The Raiders had a bye and will get back to action in week 10 versus the Chiefs in a duel for draft positioning.

27/27

Chiefs

1-7

Kansas City's rally fell short at Jacksonville as the Chiefs sunk to 6 games below .500.

28/28

Redskins

2-6

Washington played well in the second half in Atlanta, but trailed by too many points to surmount the deficit... On deck, Denver, @Dallas, @Philly, and New Orleans. You don't suppose the Redskins will roll off 4 victories in a row and get back to .500? No, we don't suppose so either. Sorry fans.

29/32

Buccaneers

1-7

Say it with me now, "Shiver me timbers." Tampa scored their first win of the season, an upset over the Packers-- as Josh Freeman threw for 3 TD's. Two weeks ago when I wrote, "all signs point to a winless season" what I really meant was, winless against teams that don't also have "Bay" in their name. BTW, the correct spelling is "Shiver my timbers." My reaction upon learning this was to blurt out, "Shiver me timbers." You know what would be great? If Buccaneers' fans turned this into a chant at the games. The next time the 'Bucs are trying to make a goal line stand, I want to hear the crowd screaming, Shiver me timbers! Shiver me timbers! Shiver me timbers!" And if Tampa scores a TD with a two point conversion, "Pieces of Eight!!!!!!"

30/29

Rams

1-7

The Rams had a bye and will look to make it back to back wins in week 10 when they host......................... the Saints.

31/30

Lions

1-7

The Lions blew a 17 point lead in Seattle. While it was encouraging they had such a lead, Stafford's 5 interceptions is concerning.

32/31

Browns

1-7

Even though Cleveland had a bye in week 9, it was hard to notice a drop off in the number of completed passes.
