"NFL Picks, Predictions,
  Point Spreads & Odds"

Power Rankings Archives - Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we dubbed that {{unstable power ranking syndrome}}.

Historical NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com payed close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that was too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflected the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they had to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad-- as you'll discover when reading through the archives.

Rank

NFL Team

Record

Comments October 23, 2007

1/1

Patriots

7-0

Brady continued his torrid pace; throwing 6 more touchdown passes as the Patriots put up 42 points in the first half in Miami to improve to (7-0).

2/2

Colts

6-0

The Colts went into Jacksonville, a place they lost last season, and made it look easy.

3/3

Cowboys

6-1

The Cowboys held Adrian Peterson to 63 yards rushing, Romo completed 31 passes, and Canty blocked a field goal which Watkins then returned for a touchdown as Dallas stayed one game ahead of the Giants in the NFC East.

4/4

Packers

5-1

Green Bay had a bye and will play in Denver on Monday Night. Meanwhile, the Lions crept a little closer to the Packers in the NFC North thanks to their home win over the Buccaneers.

5/5

Titans

4-2

Playing without Vince Young the Titans took a 32-7 lead into the 4th quarter in Houston only to relinquish the lead by allowing 4 touchdown passes to Sage Rosenfels in for Shaub who was injured in the first half... Fortunately for Tennessee, Rob Bironas nailed his 8th field goal of the day (a new NFL record) as time expired to help the Titans improve to (4-2)...

6/9

Giants

5-2

The Giants topped the 49ers by 18 points to win their 5th game in a row. While it may not be in the cards for the Giants to overtake the Cowboys in the NFC East this season, New York certainly appears on pace to grab a Wild Card berth.

7/12

Redskins

4-2

The Redskins made up for last week's loss in Green Bay (a game they probably should have won); by winning a game they probably should have lost versus Arizona. The Redskins were outyarded by the Cards 364 to 160, but escaped with a victory. According to our latest projections, the Redskins have a slight edge over Seattle, Chicago, and Tampa Bay for what would be the final Wild Card berth, with the Giants projecting to get the top Wild Card spot.

8/6

Jaguars

4-2

The Jaguars lost their second game of the season to a team currently ranked in the top 5. Do you think the Jags could have used Byron Leftwich Monday night versus Indianapolis?

9/8

Steelers

4-2

Pittsburgh ran into a Denver team desperate for a win... Losing on the road in Denver isn't something that typically cripples a team's power ranking. Meanwhile, the Steelers remain on top of the AFC North thanks to Baltimore losing to the (1-4) Bills.

10/11

Chargers

3-3

San Diego had a bye and will attempt to get back over .500 when they host the Texans in week 8 who may be without Shaub... Meanwhile, the Chiefs have risen from the depths to grab first place in the ever so volatile AFC West.

11/19

Broncos

3-3

The Broncos saved their season with a win over the Steelers on Sunday night. Denver relinquished a 14 point lead, but Jason Elam provided the fireworks with a 49 yard field goal as time expired... As far as the rankings go, the Broncos losses are to Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and San Diego (all top 10 teams). The Broncos are back to .500 but the schedule doesn't get any easier as the Packers come to town in week 8.

12/10

Buccaneers

4-3

Fumbles cost Tampa Bay a game in Detroit in which they outyarded the Lions 422 to 278. This loss drops Tampa out of the top 10, but even worse, assuming the Buccaneers keep playing good football it could cost them a playoff berth.

13/13

Panthers

4-2

The Panthers had a bye and will host the Colts in week 8... Even though Carolina previously lost at home to Tampa Bay, they now sit alone at the top of the NFC South thanks to Tampa Bay's turnover induced loss in Detroit.

14/14

Cardinals

3-4

Arizona out-gained Washington by over 200 yards and still lost the game... The loss drops the Cardinals to a game under .500 and out of first place in the NFC West.

15/21

Bears

3-4

The Bears got their second road win in three weeks with a thrilling come from behind win over the Eagles thanks to a 97 yard touchdown drive in the closing two minutes... Next week's game versus Detroit is arguably for Chicago's season... Win and it's back to .500, lose and it's back to two games below .500 while the Lions would improve to 3 games above .500.

16/7

Ravens

4-3

With losses to Cincinnati, Cleveland, and now Buffalo on the books, not to mention a very slim win over the 49ers, the Ravens will have to prove themselves all over again to get back to the top 10.

17/18

Chiefs

4-3

Kansas City grabbed sole possession of first place in the AFC West with a win at Oakland. The Chiefs have given up the fewest points in the AFC West even though they are the only team in the division that hasn't had a bye yet.

18/17

Seahawks

4-3

Seattle did what they needed to do... Get back over .500 before the bye with a win over the Rams. Furthermore, thanks to Arizona's loss in Washington, the Seahawks are in sole possession of first place in the NFC West... However, while Seattle is one game ahead of Arizona in the standings, the power rankings still have the Cardinals slightly of the Seahawks due to the head to head meeting as well as opposite results when facing the Steelers.

19/15

Eagles

2-4

Philadelphia might have seen its season go down the drain thanks to allowing a 97 yard touchdown drive to the Bears within the final two minutes of the game. The Eagles once again sit at two games below .500 and are alone in the cellar of the NFC East.

20/23

Lions

4-2

Detroit remained perfect at home this season thanks to 147 yards of rushing and capitalizing on a few turnovers by the Buccaneers. The Lions have a chance to deal a knockout blow to the Bears in week 8.

21/16

Browns

3-3

Cleveland had a bye and will attempt to get over the .500 mark in week 8 at St. Louis. As for the power rankings, Cleveland drops some as several teams pulled themselves up this week. And wins over the Ravens and Bengals aren't rating as highly as they initially did.

22/24

Bills

2-4

Props to the Bills for bouncing back to beat the Ravens after the way they lost to Dallas in their last game... Buffalo can get to within one game of .500 with a win next week over the Jets, a team they already beat once this season.

23/22

Texans

3-4

The Texans almost survived Shaub's injuries thanks to Sage Rosenfels nearly leading a miraculous comeback in the 4th quarter that fell just short thanks to the 8th field goal of the day by Rob Bironas... A win would have put the Texans ahead of the Titans in the standings. Instead, the loss keeps Houston 1 1/2 games behind the Titans, as well as the Jaguars.

24/20

Vikings

2-4

Adrian Peterson rushed for 63 yards and Jackson threw for only 72 yards as Minnesota's offense sputtered in Dallas... The Vikings now sit at two games below .500 and are in last place in the NFC North. To make matters worse, Jackson fractured a finger on his throwing hand.

25/25

Bengals

2-4

Cincinnati scored 21 fourth quarter points in a come from behind win over the Jets, preventing a (1-5) start... In order to get back to .500 by week 10, Cincinnati has to beat Pittsburgh and the suddenly tough Bills.

26/27

Saints

2-4

New Orleans took another step forward in an attempt to get back to .500 with a home win over the Falcons.

27/28

Raiders

2-4

Oakland held the Chiefs to 12 points but couldn't get the win at home. In two weeks the Raiders have gone from first place to last place in the AFC West.

28/26

Jets

1-6

The Jets blew 4th quarter lead in Cincinnati, allowing 21 fourth quarter points. This loss pretty much ends the Jets' season, if it wasn't over already... A far cry from last season's (10-6) record and playoff appearance.

29/29

Falcons

1-6

Atlanta held the lead at the half in New Orleans, but lost Leftwich in the second half not to mention the game, falling to five games below .500.

30/30

49ers

2-4

San Francisco topped 200 yards of offense for the second time this season, but that didn't help much as they fell by 18 points to the Giants and dropped to two games below .500.

31/32

Rams

0-7

The loss in Seattle marked the fourth time this season the Rams lost by a minimum of 19 points.

32/31

Dolphins

0-7

If somebody told you the Dolphins would score 28 points against the Patriots you might think they would cover a 16 point spread... Bottom line is when you give up 42 points in the first half; you're not covering any spread in the NFL... Furthermore, as if Miami's season wasn't over, perhaps the only bright spot, Ronnie Brown, has been lost for the season.
