"NFL Picks, Predictions,
  Point Spreads & Odds"

Power Rankings Archives - Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we dubbed that {{unstable power ranking syndrome}}.

Historical NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com payed close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that was too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflected the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they had to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad-- as you'll discover when reading through the archives.

Rank

NFL Team

Record

Comments December 31, 2006

1 (3)

Ravens

13-3

Surprise, surprise, Baltimore is number 1. The Ravens secured a 1st round bye with a home win over the Bills. Baltimore also finished the season undefeated against teams heading to the playoffs with a record of 3-0, including a win over the Chargers.

2 (1)

Chargers

14-2

The Chargers locked up home field throughout the playoffs while also posting the best record in the NFL. Overall the Chargers went just 2-2 versus teams heading to the playoffs.

3 (2)

Bears

13-3

The Bears finished the season dropping a meaningless home game to the Packers having already secured home field throughout the playoffs. Chicago went 3-1 against teams heading to the playoffs. But we'll keep em' ranked behind the Chargers as San Diego was in the tougher division.

4 (4)

Colts

12-4

The Colts locked up the 3rd seed with a home win over the Dolphins. Overall the Colts went 4-1 against playoff bound teams, including a win in New England.

5 (5)

Patriots

12-4

The Patriots stopped the winning streak of the Titans, and enter the playoffs as the 4th seed. With the status of Rodney Harrison in doubt, it's hard to move the Patriots ahead of the Bears, even though New England beat Chicago at home this season. Overall New England went 2-2 against playoff bound teams, including a loss to the Colts.

6 (6)

Saints

10-6

New Orleans had an amazing regular season finishing 10-6, with a 1st round bye playing against one of the toughest schedules in the NFL this season. Overall the Saints went 3-1 against playoff bound teams, thanks to a clean sweeping of all 3 NFC East playoff teams; Philadelphia, Dallas, and the New York Giants.

7 (7)

Eagles

10-6

In a testament to great coaching, Philadelphia made the playoffs without McNabb, all while having played against one of the tougher schedules in the NFL. Overall the Eagles went 3-3 against playoff bound teams, including a sweep of the Cowboys.

8 (14)

Chiefs

9-7

Kansas City moves onto the playoffs thanks to the 49ers upsetting the Broncos. The Chiefs got 8 starts from Huard in 2006 playing for the injured Green. Overall Kansas City went 2-2 against playoff bound teams, including a win over San Diego.

9 (9)

Cowboys

9-7

Dallas enters the playoffs on a sour note losing at home to Detroit. Overall the Cowboys went 2-4 against playoff bound teams, including 2 losses to Philadelphia.

10 (15)

Seahawks

9-7

Seattle moves onto the playoffs having played a good portion of the season without Alexander and Hasselbeck. Overall the Seahawks went 1-3 against playoff bound teams, including losses to both number 1 seeds.

11 (8)

Broncos

9-7

The Broncos missed qualifying for the playoffs after losing at home to the 49ers. Overall Denver played 8 games versus playoff bound teams in 2006, going 3-5 overall; 3-0 in the first half of the season, including wins over Kansas City, New England, and Baltimore, but sinking to 0-5 in the second half of the season, including getting swept by the Chargers. Our hearts go out to the family of Darrent Williams.

12 (11)

Jaguars

8-8

Jacksonville went 5-3 against playoff teams in 2006. If the Jags could have gone 5-3 against non-playoff teams they would be in the playoffs.

13 (13)

Jets

10-6

The Jets move onto the playoffs thanks to winning 5 of their final 6 games. Overall the Jets went 1-3 against teams headed to the playoffs.

14 (10)

Titans

8-8

Tennessee's winning streak came to an end versus New England. With a brutal schedule in 2006 that included 9 games versus teams headed to the playoffs, it was a tale of 2 seasons for the Titans. In their first 8 games Tennessee went 0-4 against playoff bound teams. In their final 8 games the Titans went an impressive 3-2 against playoff bound teams behind the spark of Vince Young.

15 (12)

Bengals

8-8

Cincinnati failed to qualify for the playoffs, losing at home to Pittsburgh. Overall the Bengals went 3-4 against teams headed to the playoffs, including wins over Baltimore and New Orleans

16 (16)

Giants

8-8

The Giants move onto the playoffs thanks to a win in Washington. Overall the Giants went 2-6 against playoff bound teams, losing their last 4 matchups of the season.

17 (17)

Panthers

8-8

Carolina finished at the .500 mark with a win in New Orleans. If Delhomme hadn't missed a few games at the end of the season, and/or Smith at the beginning of the season, the Panthers would almost certainly have made the playoffs. Overall the Panthers went 3-3 against playoff bound teams, including a win over the Ravens and a sweep of the Saints, but just 5-5 versus non-playoff teams

18 (18)

Falcons

7-9

The Falcons were unable to beat top teams in 2006 going 0-6 against teams headed to the playoffs, while going 7-3 versus non-playoff teams.

19 (20)

Steelers

8-8

The Steelers ended the Bengals season for the 2nd year in a row. Overall Pittsburgh went 2-3 versus playoff bound teams, and a disappointing 6-5 versus non-playoff teams.

20 (19)

Rams

8-8

The Rams just missed qualifying for the playoffs at 8-8. Overall St. Louis went 0-5 versus playoff bound teams and 8-3 versus non-playoff teams.

21 (21)

Bills

7-9

Buffalo was unable to finish at .500. Overall the Bills went 0-7 versus playoff bound teams and 7-2 versus non-playoff teams.

22 (24)

Packers

8-8

The Packers managed to finish at .500 with the Bears taking the final game off. Overall Green Bay went 1-6 versus teams headed to the playoffs, and 7-2 versus non-playoff teams.

23 (26)

49ers

7-9

San Francisco swept Seattle in 2006, but was swept by Arizona. If the 49ers could have faired better versus the Cardinals, they could have made the playoffs. Overall the 49ers went 2-5 versus teams headed to the playoffs, and 5-4 versus non-playoff teams.

24 (25)

Texans

6-10

The Texans finished the season winning 2 in a row for the first time all season. Overall Houston went 1-6 versus playoff bound teams, and 5-4 against non-playoff teams.

25 (22)

Dolphins

6-10

Miami had some moments in 2006, beating Chicago and New England. Unfortunately the Dolphins were swept by the Jets and Bills. Overall Miami went 3-4 against teams headed to the playoffs, but only 3-6 against non-playoff teams.

26 (27)

Vikings

6-10

Minnesota's fabulous run defense could only carry the team so far as the Vikings went 1-4 against playoff bound teams and 5-6 against non-playoff teams.

27 (23)

Redskins

5-11

Washington lost 4 games this season when scoring 22 or more points. If the defense had played better, the Redskins might have made the playoffs. Overall Washington went 2-6 against teams headed to the playoffs, and just 3-5 against non-playoff teams.

28 (28)

Cardinals

5-11

Arizona had a disappointing season. Overall the Cardinals went 1-5 versus playoff bound teams and 4-6 versus non-playoff teams.

29 (29)

Buccaneers

4-12

The Buccaneers had a tough season losing Simms at the outset, not to mention having a difficult schedule. Overall Tampa Bay went 1-7 versus teams heading to the playoffs, and 3-5 versus non-playoff teams.

30 (30)

Browns

4-12

The Browns had a tough schedule in 2006, but managed to go 2-4 against teams headed to the playoffs. Unfortunately the Browns went 2-8 versus non-playoff teams.

31 (31)

Lions

3-13

Detroit upset Dallas in week 17. Overall the Lions went 1-5 versus playoff bound teams, and 2-8 versus non-playoff teams.

32 (32)

Raiders

2-14

The Raiders dropped their 9th game of the season by double digits, falling on the road against the Jets.
