"NFL Picks, Predictions,
  Point Spreads & Odds"

Power Rankings Archives - Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we dubbed that {{unstable power ranking syndrome}}.

Historical NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com payed close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that was too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflected the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they had to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad-- as you'll discover when reading through the archives.

Rank

NFL Team

Record

Comments December 24, 2008

1/1

Giants

12-3

With the top seed on the line, the Giants ran wild in a come from behind, overtime victory over the ferocious Panthers to lock up home field throughout the playoffs in the NFC.

2/3

Titans

13-2

No Haynesworth, no problem. Meet Jason Jones. Tennessee earned home field throughout the playoffs in the AFC thanks to blowing out the Steelers at home in week 16.

3/5

Colts

11-4

The Colts staged a furious 4th quarter rally at division rival Jacksonville to nail down their fourth straight playoff appearance.

4/6

Panthers

11-4

For the second time in just four games DeAngelo Williams rushed for 4 touchdowns, but incredibly it wasn't enough to upstage the Giants in the battle for home field in the NFC as the Panthers surrendered 301 yards rushing. Even though the Pathers lost this game, they are playing great football if you factor out this week's rushing defense. And remember folks, Delhomme, Smith, Muhammad, and Peppers are no strangers to the postseason. They all share some very recent Super Bowl history against the Patriots... However, to win their division and hence grab the second bye in the NFC, they'll either have to beat an angry Saints team on the road that would like nothing more than to bring down their division rival-- or the Rams will have to beat the Falcons on the road.

5/2

Steelers

11-4

The Steelers tuned the ball over too many times to hang with the Titans in Tennessee, so will settle for the 2nd seed in the AFC, which still comes with a well deserved first-round bye.

6/7

Ravens

10-5

Baltimore strung together two of the longest back to back runs you will ever witness to hold off Dallas' late rally attempt. The win has the Ravens in position to grab the AFC's final wild card spot if they can beat the Jaguars at home in week 17.

7/4

Cowboys

9-6

After toppling the Giants in week 15, the Cowboys couldn't get their offense going against the Ravens in week 16 until it was too late in the game. Dallas can grab the NFC's final wild card slot with a victory at Philadelphia... Much easier said than done.

8/10

Falcons

10-5

There isn't another NFC team that deserves more kudos this season than the Falcons who have a chance to earn a first-round playoff bye if they can beat the Rams at home, and if the Saints can upset the Panthers.

9/13

Patriots

10-5

Cassel had another marvelous outing as the Patriots crushed Arizona at home, although the Cardinals looked like a cactus out of the desert... New England can take the AFC East if they win at Buffalo and the Jets beat the Dolphins or can grab a wild card with a victory over Buffalo if the Jaguars can beat the Ravens.

10/11

Vikings

9-6

The Vikings dramatically out-yarded the Falcons but lost the game no thanks to losing 4 fumbles. It wasn't the first time this season Minnesota got a case of "the fumbles" (think @Tennessee)... To win the NFC North the Vikings need to either beat the Giants in week 17 at home-- or the Texans have beat the Bears in Houston.

11/18

Redskins

8-7

Washington upset the Eagles in week 16 and reminded most people they're not a team to be overlooked, they just happened to have played a brutal schedule in 2008, as did every team in the NFC East.

12/8

Eagles

8-6-1

The Eagles' playoff hopes were almost certainly put to rest as a result of losing at Washington in week 16. In order to qualify they need to beat Dallas (possible), and Houston needs to beat Chicago (possible), and Oakland needs to win at Tampa Bay (good luck with that one).

13/16

Dolphins

10-5

There isn't another AFC team that deserves more kudos this season than the Dolphins. Miami won at Kansas City in week 16 and can take the AFC East with road win over the Jets in week 17 as Pennington has the chance to get the ultimate revenge over his former team.

14/9

Buccaneers

9-6

The Buccaneers' playoff hopes took another hit in week 16 as Rivers torched the Bucs' for 4 touchdowns in Tampa Bay... To qualify for the playoffs Tampa needs to beat the Raiders at home and the Eagles need to beat the Cowboys in Philadelphia.

15/14

Bears

9-6

The Bears stayed in the playoff hunt with their second overtime victory in a row, this time over the Packers. To take the NFC North, Chicago must win at Houston and the Giants must beat the Vikings-- or to earn a wild card the Bears must win at Houston and the Eagles must beat the Cowboys and the Raiders must beat the Buccaneers.

16/19

Saints

8-7

New Orleans crushed the Lions in week 16 as Brees continued his mission to break Marino's single season passing yards record. Maybe that will help his OneSeason stock? The Saints could make playoff life harder on the Panthers with a victory over them in week 17.

17/12

Jets

9-6

The Jets blew another game to a sub .500 team, this time at Seattle, but still have a few playoff possiblities that include getting in if they beat Miami in week 17 at home, and if either New England loses at Buffalo or Baltimore loses at home to Jacksonville. The Favre/Pennington story comes full circle this week.

18/17

Cardinals

8-7

The Cardinals were cacti out of the desert in the New England snow as they were decimated for the second week in a row. Apprarantly the playoffs can't come soon enough for the Cards.

19/25

Chargers

7-8

The Chargers upset the Buccaneers in Tampa to stay in the hunt for the AFC West. Once (4-8) who would have thought San Diego would get the chance to avenge their week 2 loss in Denver where a blown call cost them the game??? Actually we thought so when the Chargers were (4-7), but when they hit (4-8) we had to change our tune, but here they are none the less.

20/15

Texans

7-8

Houston dropped back below the .500 mark thanks to getting upset at Oakland. The Texans have a chance to play spoiler to the Bears in week 17 at home.

21/24

Bills

7-8

Buffalo played the spoiler upsetting the Broncos in Denver. The Bills have a chance for a more meaningful repeat spoiler performance if they can upset division rival New England at home in week 17.

22/20

Broncos

8-7

The Broncos fell at home to Buffalo setting up a much speculated about "week 17 showdown" with the Chargers for the AFC West crown.

23/21

Jaguars

5-10

Jacksonville let one slip away thanks to their fourth quarter meltdown at home against the Colts. The Jaguars have a chance to do a lot of favors in week 17 if they can upset the Ravens in Baltimore.

24/22

Packers

5-10

Green Bay dropped to five games below .500 as they couldn't hold a late lead Monday night in Chicago. In week 17 the Packers have a chance to send Detroit into infamy with a winless season.

25/23

49ers

6-9

The 49ers staged a furious fourth quarter come back in St. Louis to grab their sixth victory.

26/27

Bengals

3-11-1

The Bengals won their second game in a row, upending the Browns in Cleveland. Can they make it three in a row when they host the Chiefs in week 17?

27/29

Seahawks

4-11

Seattle played the spoiler, beating the Jets in Holmgren's final home game in Seattle.

28/26

Browns

4-11

Cleveland dropped to 7 games below .500 as they were dealt a home loss by surging division rival Cincinnati.

29/30

Raiders

4-11

The Raiders upset the Texans in week 16 and have a chance to get Al Davis a little Super Bowl revenge in week 17 if they can knock the Buccaneers out of the playoffs.

30/28

Chiefs

2-13

Yet another blown lead, this time against Miami. When you start adding up all of their blown leads this season (many of them late game) you can paint a picture where the Chiefs actually could have won the AFC West this season.

31/31

Rams

2-13

For the second week in a row the Rams let one get away at home-- this time against the 49ers.

32/32

Lions

0-15

Detroit got blown out at home by the Saints in week 16. In order to avoid going winless in 2008 the Lions will have to win in the bitter cold of Lambeau field. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
