"NFL Picks, Predictions,
  Point Spreads & Odds"

Power Rankings Archives - Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we dubbed that {{unstable power ranking syndrome}}.

Historical NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com payed close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that was too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflected the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they had to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad-- as you'll discover when reading through the archives.

Rank

NFL Team

Record

Comments December 5, 2006

1 (1)

Colts

10-2

While other power rankings may be licking their chops to drop the Colts from the top spot, I think that would be ridiculous given that Indianapolis is 10-2, with wins at New England, at N.Y. Giants, at N.Y. Jets, at Jacksonville, and at Denver.

2 (3)

Bears

10-2

Even with Grossman completing just 6 passes and throwing for a whopping 34 yards, the Bears were still able to win by 2 scores.

3 (2)

Ravens

9-3

The Ravens were unable to get their 10th win, losing in Cincinnati. However, the Ravens stay ahead of the Chargers in the rankings for another week. After all, Baltimore's schedule has been much tougher than San Diego's schedule... Not to mention the Ravens beat the Chargers earlier this season.

4 (4)

Chargers

10-2

The Chargers grabbed their 10th victory, with a road win in Buffalo. San Diego's schedule toughens up with games against Denver, Kansas City, and Seattle over the next 3 weeks. A couple of victories and the Chargers would have more justification for grabbing the top spot.

5 (5)

Patriots

9-3

The Patriots chaulked up an ugly win against the Lions... Losing Maroney in the first quarter certainly didn't help the cause.

6 (6)

Cowboys

8-4

Romo overcame 3 first half turnovers on the road versus the Giants as the Cowboys grabbed the win, and a commanding 2 game lead in the NFC East.

7 (8)

Seahawks

8-4

Seattle became the 3rd team to get a road win in Denver this season- joining the company of Indianapolis and San Diego. Although a victory might not have been in reach if Plummer had played instead of rookie quarterback Jay Cutler.

8 (10)

Saints

8-4

Drew Brees threw for under 200 yards, but he didn't turn the ball over. The result? The Saints routed the 49ers by 4 scores. Coach Payton faces his former team (the Cowboys) in Dallas next week.

9 (11)

Jaguars

7-5

The Jaguars won in Miami to grab their 2nd road win of the season. It only seems fitting to point out (again) if Jacksonville could have emerged victorious against Houston one time they'd be 8-4... Twice they'd be 9-3.

10 (15)

Bengals

7-5

Cincinnati's defense came to play for the 2nd week in a row as the Bengals took a low scoring affair from the Ravens in a must win game that kept Cincinnati's playoff hopes alive.

11 (7)

Broncos

7-5

The Broncos lost their 3rd game in a row in falling to the Seahawks. Quarterback play proved costly in the defeat... But it was Jay Cutler at the helm, not Jake Plummer. I came away with the feeling that Denver would have taken this game 7 out of 10 times if Plummer had played, which by sheer coincidence just happens to be Jake's winning percentage in a Bronco's uniform.

12 (12)

Giants

6-6

New York dropped to .500, and fell 2 games back of Dallas in the NFC East thanks to losing a tight game at home to the Cowboys.

13 (9)

Chiefs

7-5

The last thing the Chiefs could afford to do was lose in Cleveland... But that's exactly what happened as Kansas City's defense got beat by Derek Anderson coming off the bench for the injured Frye.

14 (14)

Jets

7-5

The Jets kept their winning ways going by crushing Green Bay en route to their 7th victory of the season.

15 (16)

Falcons

6-6

The Falcons might have saved their season with a comeback win in Washington. I repeat, "might have".

16 (24)

Titans

5-7

Tennessee continued to surprise, beating the Colts on a 60 yard field goal by Rob Bironas in the closing moments... The Titans nearly swept Indianapolis this season.

17 (19)

Eagles

6-6

Philadelphia got back to the .500 mark with an upset of the Panthers on Monday night.

18 (13)

Panthers

6-6

The Panthers' defense was torched by Jeff Garcia in a must win game.

19 (17)

Bills

5-7

Buffalo once again was unable to get back to .500. Then again, nobody is faulting them for losing at home to the Chargers.

20 (18)

Dolphins

5-7

Miami could not make it 5 wins in a row, as Jacksonville came to town and grabbed a victory. The loss burried any slim playoff hopes the Dolphins might have had.

21 (23)

Steelers

5-7

The Steelers took care of business versus the Buccaneers. Not that it means much with 7 losses already in the books.

22 (20)

49ers

5-7

The 49ers couldn't bounce back from a tough last second loss in St. Louis the week before, and were trounced by 4 scores in New Orleans.

23 (22)

Vikings

5-7

Minnesota held Rex Grossman to 34 yards passing and still lost... The loss was reminiscent of the game a few weeks ago where Minnesota held Miami -3 yards rushing, yet still lost... If the Vikings could have won those 2 games, they would be 7-5.

24 (21)

Rams

5-7

The Rams saw their playoff hopes take a hit with a home loss to the Cardinals.

25 (25)

Redskins

4-8

Washington blew a 14 point lead at home to Falcons... Not that anything major was lost in doing so.

26 (28)

Browns

4-8

The Browns upset the Chiefs in (OT) to grab their 4th win, as Derek Anderson provided the heroics coming off the bench for the injured Frye.

27 (30)

Texans

4-8

Houston grabbed a road win versus the Raiders. And we all know that in the NFL a road win is a road win.

28 (26)

Packers

4-8

The Packers dropped their 3rd game in a row, two of which were by 4 scores or more.

29 (31)

Cardinals

3-9

The Cardinals exacted a little revenge in St. Louis, paying back the Rams for an improbable last second loss earlier in the season.

30 (32)

Lions

2-10

Detroit gave the Patriots a huge scare, but in the end it turned out to be more of a loud roar than a bite... But it was certainly enough to get the Lions out of the bottom spot.

31 (27)

Buccaneers

3-9

Tampa Bay lost for the 5th time in 6 games by 2 scores or more. Does the phrase, "mailed it in" ring any bells?

32 (29)

Raiders

2-10

After giving all 3 of their AFC West division rivals a tough game, Oakland lost at home to Houston, so reclaims the bottom spot in the power rankings... It kind of makes you wonder if the Broncos, Chiefs, or Chargers were awake until the 4th quarter in the aforementioned games.
