Power Rankings Archives - Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we dubbed that {{unstable power ranking syndrome}}.

Historical NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com payed close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that was too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflected the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they had to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad-- as you'll discover when reading through the archives.

1/1

Saints

11-0

Brees and crew were spectacular on Monday night as they completely dominated the Patriots in every way, shape, and form. They haven't won the Super Bowl yet. But clearly they're more than ready for a big stage.

2/3

Vikings

10-1

Minnesota grabbed win number ten, a romp over the Bears. You couldn't have scripted this season any better for the Vikings. Everything is clicking, and has clicked all season long. Note to AP; reserve speeding for when you're running on the football field.

3/2

Colts

11-0

Manning and crew did it to Houston again... Made them think they were finally going to win, and then took it away in the 4th quarter. I'm starting to wonder if Manning (by design) wants to be trailing heading into the 4th quarter just so he can get his jollies engineering a come back... It's happened far too many times for me to not at least consider the possibility.

4/9

Chargers

8-3

The Chargers are on a heck of a run, which continued in week 12 with a stomping of the Chiefs... All signs point to (11-5), perhaps better, and a tough race with Denver for the AFC West.

5/10

Broncos

7-4

All we're trying to do is write some power rankings! Hey, I fired up my team without insulting half the population. Ok, enough of that. The Broncos upset the Giants in week 12. Although in hindsight, it wasn't much of an upset considering the quality wins this Denver team has in 2009. I'm glad we kept the Broncos in the top 10. All signs point to a dog fight with San Diego in the battle for the West.

6/4

Bengals

8-3

Cincinnati grabbed win number eight, sweeping the AFC North, as they took care of business against Cleveland at home.

7/11

Cowboys

8-3

Dallas rolled the Raiders on Turkey Day. No surprise there. Even if Dallas losses to the Giants this week, they're still our current favorite to take the NFC East.

8/6

Steelers

6-5

Dennis Dixon impressed, but the Steelers fell at division rival Baltimore in OT... It's hard to fathom the Steelers at (6-5). Of course key injuries have played a major role.

9/5

Patriots

7-4

How do I characterize this Monday night game in New Orleans? Think back to when you were 14 and you and your friends got challenged to a Nerf football game by your 9 year old brother and his friends-- and on every single play you (the 14 year olds) hit touchdown bombs. The Patriots were the 9 year olds in this game. The only problem was, they were supposed to be the older brothers.

10/8

Ravens

6-5

No doubt the Ravens saved their season with an overtime victory over the Steelers. But to make the playoffs, they've got to keep on winning. Next up, a trip to Green Bay on Monday night.

11/7

Cardinals

7-4

Playing with Leinart in for Warner, the Cardinals appeared to have the game won at Tennessee, before Vince Young pulled out another of his 4th quarter miracles a la a few seasons ago... The truth is-- with a commanding lead in the NFC West, and little chance for a first round bye, the Cardinals will surely survive this loss.

12/12

Eagles

7-4

If the Eagles hadn't rallied to squeak out a victory over division rival Washington, we would have had to break out the fork.

13/14

Packers

7-4

Green Bay took care of business at Detroit on Thanksgiving day. Can they do it again Monday night versus the Ravens? Their playoff chances hang in the balance.

14/13

Giants

6-5

The Giants fell to (6-5) with their Thanksgiving Night loss in Denver. Needless to say they must beat the Cowboys this Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive.

15/16

Falcons

6-5

With Ryan injured, Chris Redman helped the Falcons squeak out a last moment victory over the Buccaneers-- keeping playoff hopes alive in Atlanta.

16/15

Dolphins

5-6

With Miami's week 12 loss at Buffalo, I think it's time to break out the fork... 2009 has been a season dominated by woulda's, coulda's, and shoulda's in Miami.

17/18

Titans

5-6

Vince Young pulled out another miracle 4th quarter win, a la a few seasons ago. With the Titans now just one game below .500 after an (0-6) start, they head to Indianapolis-- where a victory would be truly monumental.

18/20

Texans

5-6

It happened again. Houston looked primed to beat the Colts-- and they found a way to blow it... Sadly, Houston was our money line underdog of the week. When they were leading 14-0 and in the red zone, but settled for 3 to go up 17-0, I got a sinking feeling telling me they just blew the game, right then and there.

19/21

49ers

5-6

Smith had a solid game as San Francisco dominated the Jaguars on the scoreboard. Too little too late for this season.

20/17

Jaguars

6-5

Jacksonville missed a big opportunity as far as playoff chances go when they couldn't get anything going at San Francisco.

21/22

Jets

5-6

The Jets snapped their 3 game slide, taking care of business at home against Carolina. The Jets were our free pick of the week. Have these been hot or what? Hope I didn't just curse this week's free play.

22/19

Panthers

4-7

I have a history of sticking up for solid veteran quarterbacks who unfairly got run out of town for having a ***handful*** of bad games... Drew Bledsoe, Jake Plummer, and Kurt Warner come to mind. Jake Delhomme is still in town, and I really can't find anything on his behalf. I guess it boils down to coach likes you or he doesn't. Four more interceptions as the Panthers fell to (4-7) with their loss to the Jets.

23/23

Bears

4-7

The Bears were non-competitive in Minnesota as the story of this season keeps getting worse and worse.

24/24

Chiefs

3-8

Just when the Chiefs had an air of competitiveness about them, they get roasted by over 4 scores at division rival San Diego.

25/26

Redskins

3-8

For the second week in a row, the Redskins made life tough for a division rival. But like last week against Dallas, the Redskins couldn't hold on against the Eagles.

26/27

Bills

4-7

Buffalo grabbed win number four, a victory over Miami, as they finally had a good fourth quarter... Looks like my "joke entry" from last week worked magic for Buffalo in reverse.

27/25

Raiders

3-8

The Raiders got back to their non-winning ways in Dallas, losing big on Thanksgiving.

28/28

Seahawks

4-7

Seattle grabbed win #4, winning on the road in St. Louis. Forsett had a good game, but Hasselbeck was held to just 102 yards passing. With two wins against the Rams, one against Detroit, and another over Jacksonville, it's no surprise this (4-7) team is ranked just about rock bottom.

29/29

Buccaneers

1-10

With Matt Ryan out in the first quarter, the 'Bucs smelled blood and almost upset the Falcons in Atlanta. Josh Freeman played well again.

30/30

Rams

1-10

Despite holding Hasselbeck to 102 yards passing, the Rams fell at home to Seattle. Why does it always seem like the Rams are (1-10)?

31/31

Lions

2-9

I know it's hard to fathom, but on the heels of Detroit's Thanksgiving Day blowout loss to Green Bay (as Stafford went interception crazy again) the Lions were mathematically eliminated from Super Bowl contention.

32/32

Browns

1-10

Cleveland's inept season continued with a loss at division rival Cincinnati. At least they held the Bengals out of the 20's.
