  Point Spreads & Odds"

Power Rankings Archives - Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we dubbed that {{unstable power ranking syndrome}}.

Historical NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com payed close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that was too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflected the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they had to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad-- as you'll discover when reading through the archives.

Rank

NFL Team

Record

Comments November 27, 2007

1/1

Patriots

11-0

New England remained perfect with an imperfect win over Philadelphia.

2/2

Cowboys

10-1

The Cowboys held the Jets to under 200 net yards of offense in a Thanksgiving Day blowout. The Cowboys host the Packers next week in a game that's likely to decide home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

3/3

Packers

10-1

The Packers all but clinched the NFC North with their Thanksgiving road win in Detroit. Green Bay heads to Dallas next week for a matchup that's likely to decide home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

4/4

Colts

9-2

The Colts came back from an early 10 point deficit in Atlanta to grab their ninth win of the season and stay one game ahead of Jacksonville who visits next week. The Colts need to win or tie to remain in sole possession of first place in the AFC South.

5/5

Jaguars

8-3

The Jaguars grabbed a home win over the Bills to stay at the forefront of wild card contention. Meanwhile, if Jacksonville can win at Indianapolis in week 13, they will be tied for first place with the Colts in the AFC South.

6/7

Steelers

8-3

The Steelers were almost shutout at home by the (0-10) Dolphins thanks in part to the field condition... In the end it was Pittsburgh hanging on to shut out Miami so they're certainly more than off the hook.

7/8

Buccaneers

7-4

With Garcia missing most of the game due to a first quarter injury, Tampa Bay was out-yarded by more than 2:1 by Washington but the Bucs still escaped with a victory thanks to 6 turnovers committed by the Redskins... The Buccaneers have surrendered the fewest points in the NFC, and are going overlooked as contenders. Furthermore, Tampa could just as easily be (9-2) right now.

8/6

Giants

7-4

Three of Manning's four interceptions were returned by the Vikings for touchdowns... But even with the loss, the Giants remain at the forefront of wild card contention in the NFC.

9/10

Chargers

6-5

San Diego beat the Ravens to get back above .500 while taking sole possession of first place in the AFC West thanks to Denver's 4th quarter meltdown in Chicago.

10/16

Browns

7-4

The Browns kept their winning ways going with a victory over the Texans. Cleveland is still in the running for the division title thanks to having an easier remaining schedule than the Steelers; although the Browns are essentially two games behind Pittsburgh due to getting swept.

11/17

Seahawks

7-4

The Seahawks survived an end of game goal-to-go situation in St. Louis against a Rams team playing without Bulger for most of the game. As far as rankings go, four of Seattle's seven wins have come against the Rams and 49ers.

12/9

Titans

6-5

The Titans dropped their third game in a row, this time losing at Cincinnati. Tennessee's defense hasn't been the same without Albert Haynesworth. And if he doesn't come back soon, Tennessee may not make the playoffs; something they were on pace to do with flying colors just a few weeks ago.

13/13

Eagles

5-6

The Eagles nearly pulled off the upset of the decade at New England as 24 1/2 point underdogs, but A.J. Feeley's interceptions proved too costly. Otherwise his play was stellar.

14/11

Redskins

5-6

Our best wishes go out to Sean Taylor's family and friends in their time of mourning. Here was a tremendous player, and more importantly a father who's life was cut short.
As far as this week's power rankings go, you know the story. Almost all of Washington's losses this season have come against top ranked teams in very close games. And while it counts for nothing in the standings, it does count in the power rankings. Not that power rankings mean anything in the face of terrible news as this.

15/12

Cardinals

5-6

Warner threw for 484 yards and Arizona still lost at home to the 49ers... The Cardinals are starting to resemble last season's Jaguars; plenty of impressive wins, but no trip to the playoffs thanks to getting swept by a lower ranked division foe.

16/14

Lions

6-5

The Lions lost at home to Green Bay on Thanksgiving. It was the Lions second home loss in a row. Furthermore, Detroit's chances of earning a wild card spot took a big hit.

17/23

Vikings

5-6

The Vikings used defense to win at Giants Stadium returning three Manning interceptions for touchdowns. Competition for a wild card berth in the NFC is plentiful and the Vikings are still in the running. However, losses to Detroit and Philadelphia weigh heavily on the Vikings' chances, so they may have to run the table.

18/19

Bears

5-6

The Bears kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a dramatic comeback win over the Broncos, thanks in major part to Devin Hester who returned two more kicks for touchdowns. By now everyone knows the stat; Devin Hester has 10 combined kickoff returns and punt returns for touchdowns in his short 27 game NFL career. The all time leader is Brian Mitchell with 13 kick return touchdowns in 223 games. Consider if Devin Hester plays 223 games at this pace he projects to score 83 touchdowns by way of kicks... Of course he may not run so prolifically his entire career, nor reach 223 games which is nearly 14 seasons. However, if Hester even comes close to matching half of this projection he will surely be headed to the Hall of Fame. Could you keep a player out of Canton with say, 40 kick returns for touchdowns? Not a chance.

19/15

Broncos

5-6

The Broncos couldn't hold their 4th quarter lead in Chicago and let the game get away. The loss dropped Denver into 2nd place in the AFC West, while hurting their future chances for a wild card berth.

20/22

Saints

5-6

The Saints pulled back to a game below .500 with a road win at Carolina. However, chances of catching the Buccaneers are slim, and wild card competition is plentiful.

21/18

Bills

5-6

Buffalo hung in at Jacksonville until the 4th quarter when they were blown out. The loss dropped the Bills below .500.

22/20

Texans

5-6

With the loss at Cleveland, Houston fell back below .500. What might the Texans' record be if both Shaub and Johnson hadn't missed so many games?

23/21

Chiefs

4-7

A home loss to Oakland dropped the Chiefs to 3 games below .500 and essentially ended any and all playoff hopes for this season.

24/24

Bengals

4-7

Cincinnati showed that when they play good red zone defense they can win big, and win big they did at home against the Titans. Unfortunately such defensive showings have been few and far between for the Bengals.

25/30

Raiders

3-8

The Raiders ended their 6 game losing streak with a win at Kansas City thanks to 139 yards rushing by Justin Fargas.

26/25

Ravens

4-7

Baltimore allowed 22 points in the second quarter at San Diego, which was too much for the Ravens to overcome with their ongoing offensive struggles.

27/28

Falcons

3-8

The Falcons jumped out to a 10 point lead on the Colts and then proceeded to get outscored 31-3 the rest of the way. The loss sank Atlanta to 5 games below .500.

28/26

Panthers

4-7

The Panthers lost their fifth game in a row, falling at home to the Saints.

29/27

Jets

2-9

The Jets could only muster 180 yards of offense at Dallas as the Cowboys scored more points on their opening possession than the Jets could all game. The loss knocked the Jets back to 7 games below .500.

30/29

Rams

2-9

Even with Bulger out for most of the game the Rams had a chance to beat the Seahawks, but couldn't come through thanks in part to Frerotte's fumble. St. Louis can add this game to their growing list of heartbreaking losses to Seattle.

31/31

49ers

3-8

The 49ers ended their 8 game losing streak with a dramatic overtime win in Arizona.

32/32

Dolphins

0-11

The Dolphins were shut out in Pittsburgh by the score of 3-0. It was their 11th loss of the season and sixth by just 3 points.
