"NFL Picks, Predictions,
  Point Spreads & Odds"

Most NFL power rankings bounce teams all over because they disregard strength of schedule, or over-emphasize the most recent game played; giving too much credit for a single blowout of a low ranked team, and not enough credit for a close loss to a high ranked team.

At FootballLOCKS.com we call that {{{unstable power ranking syndrome}}}...

NFL power ratings at FootballLOCKS.com pay close attention to strength of opponents played without over-crediting the last game played (that's too fresh on the mind of many writers); all in a quest to deliver you with a weekly NFL power ranking that reflects the power of each team, and not just their record. For a team to crack the top 10 in FootballLOCKS.com's NFL football rankings, they have to earn it with more than a single crushing of a bottom ranked squad.

Saints

16-3†

Drew Brees tied Tom Brady's mark for most completions in a Super Bowl as the Saints upset the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. Aside from Brees' MVP performance, standouts include Tracy Porter's interception of Peyton Manning returned for a touchdown with under 3 1/2 minutes to play, Sean Payton's decision to open the second half with an onside kick (recovered by the Saints), and the Saints coming back from a 10 point deficit to win (tying a record)... The Saints weren't afraid to take chances in their quest to win it all-- in stark contrast to a Colts' team this regular season that was afraid to take the risk associated with attempting to go perfect. Congrats to the champs.

2/1

Colts

16-3†

It's not often you see Peyton Manning blush. But when he was picked off by Tracy Porter (returned for a TD) with the game on the line in Super Bowl XLIV (at the 3:22 mark of the 4th quarter) Manning knew he'd just thrown one of the most memorable passes in Super Bowl history-- for all the wrong reasons... This Colts team had a chance to be perfect in 2009 - 2010, but the organization was afraid to take that risk, mailing in their second half in week 16 versus the Jets... This was quite a contrast to a Saints team unafraid to take risks, as exemplified by their onnside kick to open the second half of Super Bowl XLIV.

† = Playoff Adjusted Record.

NFL Power Rankings Methodology:
FootballLOCKS.com's weekly NFL power rankings aren't a listing of teams in order of their current standings like some news and information sources covering pro football publish from week to week... FootballLOCKS.com's pro football power rankings emphasize and adjust for the strength of schedule played to determine the weekly ranks... For example, we might rank team A higher than team B, even though we forecast team B to finish the season with a better record. This can be due to team B having an easier schedule than team A. Just because they may have the better record, doesn't necessarily mean we think they are the better team.

The Art of Power Ranking NFL Teams Beyond The Standings:
One team can lose a close game or two versus a top team without falling 12 spots like you might find while reading an NFL power poll at other NFL power ratings publishers.

Likewise, an NFL team can crush a couple of bottom feeders without instantly soaring 12 spots to crack the top 5 when they haven't won a game versus another team in the top 10 in a year and a half, let alone versus a team in the top 5.

These are level headed NFL power ratings. We can't spreak for the NFL power rank methods of others. However, if calculations predict that a 3-4 team would likely win in a game versus a 4-3 team on a neutral field, then the 3-4 team will be ranked higher in the FootballLOCKS.com NFL power ranks.

A Goal of Pro Football Power Rankings:
One goal is to arrive at a ranking of NFL teams that serves as a prediction of what league standings would resemble if every team played the same schedule.

Therefore, in order to determine each team's NFL power rating, adjustments are made for the strength of schedule that each team faces. After all, the NFL power polls are an effort to assess which teams are best in the NFL from top to bottom, not which teams had the easiest schedule so have the best record at any given point in time-- or even the best record in the final NFL standings.

As a result, within FootballLOCKS.com's NFL rankings it's possible to find a team with a better record ranked closely to or below a team with a record that isn't quite as good... Otherwise, NFL power ratings would simply be a list of teams in exact order of their records; and there's already a name for that. They're called "NFL standings".

Of course FootballLOCKS.com's NFL power ranking formula is instrumental in making NFL line adjustments internally as part of FootballLOCKS.com's backwards odds handicapping strategy for making NFL picks versus Las Vegas weekly NFL odds and point spreads. However, as FootballLOCKS.com is in the NFL handicapping business, this element of the weekly ratings is not released.

We hope you enjoy FootballLOCKS.com's NFL weekly power rankings. Be sure to bookmark the FootballLOCKS.com NFL power ranking page, and return week after week (when in season) for the Tuesday update.
